Certification Maintenance

Certification Maintenance

To maintain their certification, AICP members are required to log a minimum of 32 Certification Maintenance (CM) approved credit hours in every biennial reporting period, including at least 1.5 approved credit hours each for Law and Ethics. Some exemptions apply, such as for retired or unemployed planners. Click the “More Information” link below for a detailed description of the CM exemptions.

CM Logs: AICP members are required to maintain their own CM logs and must file a claim for each credit as it is earned. CM credits are recorded on the National APA website through a member’s “My APA” profile.

Certification Maintenance Credits can be earned through a variety of activities. The following represents the latest information on how AICP members can earn CM credits.

Live Attendance and Instruction: Chapter and State planning association conferences and other CM-approved training opportunities are regularly available for AICP members to attend and receive CM credits. Speakers at such sessions are entitled to additional credits.

Internet-Based Live Chapter Training: Several APA Chapters, including our Chapter, have collaborated to underwrite a regularly-scheduled and diverse array of internet-based training opportunities, available through the Utah Chapter: www.utah-apa.org/webcasts.htm.

Self-Reported Attendance: Self-Reported claims may only be made for activities that meet CM approval criteria. Members may self-report up to eight (8) hours of self-reported attendance per two-year reporting period.

Distance Learning and Free CM Opportunities: A variety of CM-approved Internet-based training opportunities are available, such that most of a AICP planner’s required 32 credit hours can be earned from the comfort of your home or office, free of charge.

Authoring an Article: The article must be planning related and published in a journal that follows the double-blind peer-review process. Members will receive eight (8) CM credits per article, regardless of length. Authoring cannot exceed sixteen (16) CM credits per two-year reporting period.
